A Letter from Ally Murray
Dear Friend of Canterbury:

My name is Ally Murray. I graduated from the Arts Canterbury program in 2009, studying drama.

When I received my acceptance letter my whole house erupted into hoots and hollers of joy! Even my parents, who had been ferrying my two big sisters back and forth to the Arts Canterbury program from Kanata since 1999, were ecstatic!  I had always wanted to go too, but didn’t realize until I got there what a great experience it would actually be – it was like a second home to me.  Because of my experiences in the drama program at Canterbury, I am excited to be pursuing theatre now at university.
The Canterbury Arts Centre Development Association (CACDA) is Arts Canterbury’s very own charity.  Through people like you CACDA is able to raise funds to support this excellent program.  Today I would like to ask you to renew your support by making a tax deductible gift to CACDA.

Because Arts Canterbury is such a great place for students like me, I want to make sure that those still in elementary school have a chance to come here too, if they wish.  Today, the Arts Canterbury program needs your renewed support.

This year, to everyone’s relief, the program is not facing threats of further cuts by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.  But funding for the arts overlay costs has never been restored – and those costs are ongoing – and needed to sustain the quality of the program every year.  We still want to keep the auditions free, so that all kids in the community have the chance to try out - we still want to be able to help support bursaries for successful applicants who struggle with the upgrade fee - and we still want to be able to help with exciting new capital projects.

An Arts Canterbury education begins each January with auditions – up to 600 hopeful students of music, dance, drama, visual arts and budding writers try out for the available spaces.  About 200 students are accepted each year.  Auditions are expensive for the school to run, but are crucial to the success of the students who are accepted, to ensure that they are the best possible prospects in their choice of program.

Your support has helped to sponsor the auditions, provide bursaries, and fund supplies and special purchases.  You can continue to help us do that by sending in a donation to CACDA or by contributing to the Endowment Fund.

CACDA also raises funds by hosting the Canterbury Stars Return Gala every second year.  Galas are not possible each and every year, and there will be no Gala in February 2009.  Your donations, along with  those of many others who believe in the value of this program, are a second source of funds, and that’s why I’m asking you to send a gift today.

Making a gift is easy:  go to CACDA’s secure donation site and give using your credit card.  Or send a cheque, using the coupon and envelope enclosed.  You might consider a regular, systematic contribution through the United Way payroll contribution (our charitable number is 891786840 RR0001), or through your employer’s matching donation program.

You can be a proud supporter of this great program – and expect a letter of thanks and a tax deductible charitable receipt.

So act today! Your gift will make a real difference right now in the lives of over 800 kids like me, Arts Canterbury students.  You’ll play a big part in providing us with an amazing education and letting us reach our maximum potential!

Thank you so much!

Sincerely,

Ally Murray
